you can get a wild card spot with 7 in some cases,it depends on how it plays out at the end of the season.

The division champion with the best record.
The division champion with the second-best record.
The division champion with the third-best record.
The division champion with the fourth-best record.
The Wild Card club with the best record.

It really depends on how bad the division is. As long as a team has more wins than the other three teams in their division, they will go to the playoffs. There are also two wild card teams. These would be the two teams (from any division in the conference) who have the next best records. In some cases, a wild card team can have more wins than a division winner. Typically if a team has between 8 and 10 wins, they will make the playoffs, but it is not always a guarantee. And for the people fighing about USC...what the hell, they are not in the NFL so who cares! This question is about the NFL. Keep your petty fights confined to the college section!

In order to clinch a playoff berth you must either win your division or have one of the two best records of non-division winner teams. There really is no set number. Heck, last season the Giants made the playoffs at 8-8, yet several teams with a 9-7 record were left out. Usually 10 wins will get you in, but it is all according to division records. Sorry, no straightforward answer here it varies every year.

The winner of each of the 8 divisions gets in and two wild cards from each of the two conferences. The last playoff team can vary from 8 to 10 wins usually.
